CL Walters captures perfectly the angst and anguish of being a teenager. The Ugly Truth brought me back to the years when I was a teenager, struggling to understand young love, friendships and all of the pains of growing up.After a slow start, the writing drew me further and further in. I really didn't like the protagonist at first, but the author brought greater clarity as the story went along and I realized he was a victim of his family, especially his father.
In ways,this story was very reminiscent of Looking for Alaska. By the end of it, I couldn't put it down. Had to read until i found out what happened to Seth. For me,that is the only measure of a good book.
Great job CL Walters. Cheers to a very good read!!!

First, I don't read YA Novels. They haven't appealed to me so I avoid them. However, after finding and reading Swimming Sideways I was anxious for book II in this series. It did not disappoint. Walters has a unique perspective and voice and it is stronger and even more enticing in the Ugly Truth. This more appropriately might classified as a New Adult novel with its deep and thoughtful prose. Regardless of what category you place it in, this book is thoughtful and provocative and reinforces the human spirit wanting to feel loved and have a sense of belonging. Grab the kleenex when you read it. The worst part of the book---it ends. But there is a third one on the way evidently. Yay!

Walters captures the intensity of falling in love for the first time. It was so refreshing to go on a journey with a main character who has deep flaws and lessons to learn. The story echoes one's own experiences of looking inward with honesty, and I found myself holding my breath in places where Seth had choices to make. I had to keep reading to find out who Seth really was and who he would choose to be. Wonderful work with surprising plot twists along the way. Brava!
An excellent read! Walters weaves an exceptionally insightful narrative that leaves you reading until the wee hours of the morning. While at times Seth's self-loathing pushes the envelope of being too much, the unfolding of Seth's back story and his search for redemption casts him in a sympathetic light such that you can't help but cheer for him. Although she rides the edge of being two-dimensional, Seth's girlfriend Abby lends a clear voice of wisdom - she is Dante's Virgil and Beatrice rolled into one. Perhaps what Walters does best is capture the internal machinations of the lost teenage soul. The process of self discovery is a difficult one and, perhaps more difficult, is writing that process into a narrative that captures and keeps your attention. Walters does this with extreme success. She is an excellent storyteller - a fresh, new voice to the landscape of young adult fiction.
