Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever… unless fate steps in with a second chance.
One ‘Dear John’ letter haunted Bobby Baker’s every living moment. It was the letter he’d stupidly written to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he had left to join the Army. The letter in which he’d told her that he wasn’t so sure they were ready for forever yet. Before he could let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, were nothing more than a mistake, she disappeared from the small Georgia town they had both been raised in.
Fifteen years after the letter, Belle unknowingly walked back into Bobby’s life when her job as an ATF Agent forced her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever was involved in funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.
Bobby planned to use this mission to try to soothe Belle’s hurt feelings while proving to her that their love was meant to be forever. He would use every dirty trick he’d learned since he had joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. Belle was not making it easy, though, as she continued to keep him at arm’s length in the hopes that mistakes of her own would never come to light.

"This is another one of those stories that I find it hard to convey the emotions I had without discussing the reasons for those emotions - hurt, sad, angry, hopeful, anxious, scared, nauseous, relieved - any book that can put me through the ringer as thoroughly as Secret Maneuvers did is one I will recommend to EVERYONE. Even if you don't think you like Contemporary Romance, you will like this." Laura, Little Read Riding Hood
Secret Maneuvers Ex Ops Series Book 1 edition by Jessie Lane Romance eBooks
Overall I did enjoy this book, it had really good characters with all the guys on Ex Ops team, and the two leads were very strong and well written. I did enjoy that Belle was an independent woman who found herself with an unplanned pregnancy makes her own way in the world raising their son, but also that she doesn’t cocoon herself away and it does discuss that over the 15 years she continued to have sexual partners but not love. This is so different from other stories I read with the woman having kept themselves “pure” in their love for the one they lost while the male lead has continued to have sexual relationships even though he’s still in love with the one he lost, and personally I think this was so much more realistic. I also enjoyed that this was a story of first love and after Bobby panics being away from Belle and his family for the first time at boot camp about how young they were to have found “true love” and writes to break up with her, it was immediately regretted and he continues to feel that love for her over the years. Finding their way back was quite the journey as they were getting to know each other again, dealing with their son and this secret having been held and a drug cartel case to solve. The story moved very well but there were some inconsistencies that I found really jarring as everything else was flowing really well, so even though they aren’t big issues it was enough to bring down my overall enjoyment of the book.**SPOILERS AHEAD**
When Belle moves away she is worried that her father has pressed charges against her for assault as she knocked him out to defend herself so she takes on the last name of her best friend to hide herself. Bobby mentions that this must not have been done legally as the investigators he hired over the years would’ve found that out to find her, so how exactly does she become an ATF agent? Is there no requirements to prove who you are, provide a birth certificate, something? Also Bobby is the one who tells her that not only did her father not press charges but that he’s dead, so at no time in the 15 years did she look into if there was a warrant for her arrest, despite having access to law enforcement databases? Then as a mother who supposedly loves her son more than anything, she takes off and spends her nights all over the place (for work) but there seems to be little follow up on where is her son, who will be taking care of him etc? This only comes up once Bobby knows about him and then these times are mentioned in passing for people to go check on him, but there seems to be no consistent childcare in place even though she clearly travels a lot. It seems to be very much written as if her son is mentioned only when convenient to the story and forgotten the rest of the time. Then when they are finally on the same page and back together and Bobby has had a scare with Belle almost dying, and we have had internal dialogue about how he understands why she kept the secret of their son, when she’s on her hospital bed and finally waking up an he’s asking her to be with him but when she asks if he forgives her, he says no?! This made no sense for where the story was at that time and just seemed to be a way to get another few chapters out of the book; it really served no purpose other than to make me feel very confused and frustrated.

Secret Maneuvers Ex Ops Series Book 1 edition by Jessie Lane Romance eBooks Reviews
As teenagers Bobby Baker the golden boy falls for Annabelle smith the daughter of an alcoholic single father. The two teenagers share a night together. Bobby leaves for the Army promising to marry Annabelle (Belle) when he gets home.
However he sends her a dear Jane letter in a moment of weakness and is unable to take it back before she disappears. The day she got the letter Annabelle had gone to Bobby's parents house after a nasty run in with her abusive dad that guaranteed she could never go back home and Bobby's letter meant her plan to beg his parents to take her in was NOT an option either.
Annabelle had the makings for a great strong, kick ass female but falls short more often then she impresses. (sad given her possibility to be a great character) I loved her friend Teagan.
Bobby is NO HERO. While at one point in the book he had a right to be angry. But his temper is FAR TOO VOLATILE and violently angry. The author repeatedly has Bobby claim to love Belle, and swear he would not physically harm her. I don't buy it. He constantly invisions strangling her and the hate is so intense that I seriously think he will. The grown up, trained solider he is suppose to be is greatly at odds with his temper. Bobby is really just a giant ANGRY Spoiled MAN CHILD. he wants his idealized teenage version of Annabelle. His vicious verbal abuse and disturbing repeated thoughts of strangling Annabelle made it very easy to see him as a villain. If you like verbally abusive, misogynist then Bobby is that guy.
Secret Maneuvers was the first book in the Ex Ops series by Jessie Lane. Although I’ve read a collaboration series by Lane with Chelsea Camaron previously, this was my first solo writing by Lane.
This was a second chance romance. And I’m a sucker for second chances. Annabelle “Belle” Smith and Bobby Baker were childhood sweethearts. Bobby was the gorgeous and popular football guy that everyone loved. Although beautiful and feisty, Belle was the trailer park girl that everyone ignored. Belle’s fear was that it was too good to be true....and it was.
Fast forward fifteen years later and they were assigned to the same task force, reuniting again, but under very different circumstances. This time Belle was locked up tight, never one to experience attachments again. Lane took us through the groveling chase alongside a suspenseful plot through their respective employers, ATF and Ex Ops. I enjoyed that Lane didn’t sugarcoat it but portrayed the real hurt and anger that would have most definitely been present as the story began to unfold. It was well written, well developed and entertaining.
Lane also set the stage for the series by introducing the colorful and broken cast of characters that we’ll explore more as the series progresses. Next up is the quiet and heartbroken Riley Sullivan in Stripping her Defenses.
